From the beginning, we knew that celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps in one volume was futile. The book would either be too big to pick up, or fail utterly to capture the textures and flavors of the Peace Corps experience. So this project represents the more ambitious idea of creating four volumes representing three real geographical regions and one imaginary one.

We will bring you stories from the Americas, Africa and the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific. The fourth volume—After the Cold War: Stories from Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Russia and China—demonstrates just how durable and flexible the Peace Corps can be. Who would have guessed in 1961 that volunteers would be able to say "I was there" in those places.
